Feeding critically ill patients

JCooperDo patients in intensive care that can't take food directly benefit from nutrients delivered directly into the bloodstream (parenteral nutrition)? Prof Jamie Cooper and the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group participated in a multicentre, randomised, single-blind clinical trial in Intensive Care Units in Australia and New Zealand, which suggests that early use of parentral nutrition doesn't improve survival or reduce the length of time patients stay in hospital (JAMA: May 22/29, 2013 013; 309 (20): pp2130-2138)(http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1689534).
