Representatives from University of Malaya visit SPHPM

13.5.13 University of Malaya Visitors
Prof Awang Bulgiba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor/Deputy President of Research Innovation, and Prof Danny Wong, Director of the Global Planning and Strategy Centre from the University of Malaya visited the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine on the 9th of May 2013. They met with several key staff members from the School, namely Prof Michael Abramson, Prof Brian Oldenburg, Prof Ajay Mahal, A/Prof Deborah Glass, A/Prof Peter Smith and Dr Jay Illesinghe.

Prof Awang said that their Department of Social & Preventive Medicine had been restructured into a School of Public Health.  They had established a Centre for Occupational & Environmental Health, headed by A/Prof Victor Hoe, a former PhD student from SPHPM.  They also had a Centre for Population Health, in collaboration with Queens University in Belfast.  The Julius Centre had expertise in epidemiology and evidence based medicine, and was associated with the Cochrane Collaboration.  The wider medical school had particular strengths in areas such as infectious diseases and pharmacogenomics.

Their visit to SPHPM focused on developing collaborations between our school and the University of Malaya, particularly in areas of non-communicable disease, health economics, worker’s compensation and registries.
