Flu Vaccine - Is one dose enough?

Patients with impaired immune systems may require more than one dose of the flu vaccine to be protected. This was the finding of a review and meta-analysis which was awarded a Best Poster Prize at the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases annual meeting held in Adelaide this week.

The study was conducted as part of a summer vacation scholarship by Eric Aizenstros, a Monash medical student, and DEPM’s Allen Cheng, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases. They analysed data from 54 studies in patients on dialysis, with HIV infection, and following organ transplants and haematological cancers. The study was a meta-regression to explore factors associated with protection following influenza vaccination. Immune responses comparable to those in healthy people were elicited after multiple doses of influenza vaccine, and possibly using an adjuvanted vaccine.
