FluCan Continuation Secured by A/Prof Allen Cheng

Influenza is a relatively mild infection in most people, but some patients require hospitalisation. Since 2009, the Influenza Complications Alert Network (FluCAN) has collected data on patients requiring hospitalisation at hospitals around Australia. An agreement has recently been signed Between Monash University Lead by A/Prof Allen Cheng and the Commonwealth Department of Health to continue this study at 15 hospitals for the 2014 season and to extend coverage to include two paediatric hospitals.
The data collected by the Network can be useful in informing public health authorities about the severity of each flu season. In addition to the number of admissions to the participating hospitals, data are collected on risk factors and the severity of infection. This surveillance system also assesses vaccine coverage and can estimate how effective the flu vaccine is at preventing hospitalisation.
