SPHPM Welcome Prof John Zalcberg

Following on from 17 years as Director of Cancer Medicine at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Prof Zalcberg has recently taken up the post of Head of Cancer at The School of Public Health and Preventive medicine.
“I have known of the SPHPM and the enormous amount of great research being done to improve the quality of health care within Monash for some time now” said Prof Zalcberg.

“At the end of the day, research is about ‘how do we do it better’. With a mortality of 50-60%, when I first started in the field, how could cancer clinicians do anything but strive to do better”, said Prof Zalcberg. “I'm pleased to say that at least these days, the mortality from cancer is closer to 40% but we still have a long way to go,”

Head of School, Professor John McNeil said Prof Zalcberg’s appointment represents a major gain for SPHPM.

“Cancer is an area of increasing importance to research activities though-out the School. With his strong background of research achievements and major international reputation, Prof Zalcberg will allow us to better exploit our major projects such as ASPREE, the clinical registries and our major occupational cohorts”, said Prof McNeil.
