Is depression a risk factor for knee pain?

A systematic review co authored by SPHPM researchers Prof Flavia CicuttiniA/Prof Anita WlukaDr Yuanyuan Wang and Dr Donna Urquhart has recently found that depression plays a significant role in knee pain.

According to the study, psychosocial factors are important in the development and progression of musculoskeletal pain and disability, however the review has recognised that depression is a significant factor in patients with knee pain.

The study discovered that though there was a strong relationship between depression and knee pain, there was limited evidence pointing towards a relationship between knee pain and anxiety or poor mental health.

According to the study, a biopsychological approach to the management of knee pain and depression is important in treating the condition.
