National Registry for Obesity Treatment

SPHPM researchers, A/Prof Wendy Brown, Prof Paul O'Brien, Dianne MacCartney and Brittany Smith recently attended a luncheon at the offices of the Medical Technology Association of Australia in Sydney to brief device industry representatives on progress with the national bariatric surgery registry.

In May earlier this year, DEPM together with the Obesity Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand were awarded over $800,000 to set up and co-ordinate the first Australian / New Zealand registry to record the outcomes of bariatric surgical procedure undertaken. The registry recently released its second interim report .

According to 2007 statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), Australia has the third-highest prevalence of overweight adults in the Anglosphere. The annual cost of obesity in Australia estimated to be around $58 billion.
