School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine NHMRC grant success

Monash University has received $72 million – the largest amount given to a university in last week's NHMRC project grants funding announcement.

More than $3.5 million was awarded to a project led by A/Prof Marianne Chapman, from the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, to discover if improved nutrition for patients in intensive care units could increase recovery rates.

The NHMRC also highlighted specific research grants that will tackle the Government’s nine National Health Priority Areas. A/Prof Anita Wluka, from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, was noted as one of the grant recipients taking a unique research approach to the challenge of improving outcomes for people with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions, one of the nine National Health Priority Areas.

A/Prof Wluka’s team will conduct a randomised controlled trial to determine whether a particular drug offers relief for people with knee osteoarthritis who have become sensitised to pain.

Grants were also awarded to A/Prof Karin Leder for her work in environmental and host contributors to infectious health threats and burden of infectious diseases, A/Prof Sophia Zoungas for her research in improving health outcomes with ageing and diabetes and Prof Helena Teede for her research in management and health care needs of patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Other successful application who grants will be administered by SPHPM were Mr Matthew Page, Dr Christina Chang, Dr Donna Urquhart, Prof Michael Berk, A/Prof Erica Wood, Prof Tomas Corcoran Prof Henry Krum and Prof John McNeil

Monash ranked first for both the number of grants and the total amount funded in this year’s round. Stroke, prostate cancer, chronic back pain and lung disease, are just a few examples of the 107 Monash University research area to receive funding from the NHMRC.
