Dr Erica Wood attends the first WHO consultation on medicinal products of human origin

Attendees at the WHO conference
Dr Erica Wood of DEPM's Transfusion Research Unit participated in the first WHO consultation on medicinal products of human origin (MPHO) held in Geneva on 15-16 September.

The meeting addressed key issues regarding availability, safety, clinical use, trace ability and ethical aspects of MPHO for transplantation, transfusion and assisted reproduction at a national and international level.

According to a WHO study, medicinal products of human origin (MPHO) include blood, organs, bone marrow, cord blood, corneas, tissues, reproductive cells and milk derived from humans for therapeutic use. These materials, obtained from people whose safety, privacy and human rights need to be protected, provide important and often irreplaceable therapies.
