SPHPM’s Professor John Zalcberg announced as the Tony Charlton Chair of Oncology


SPHPM’s Professor John Zalcberg OAM was yesterday announced the inaugural Tony Charlton OAM was yesterday announced the inaugural Tony Charlton Chair of Oncology at the Alfred Hospital. Jointly appointed between Monash University and the Alfred, this leadership position will steer the Alfred’s oncology program into the future, cultivating innovative new treatments and transferring research findings into clinical practice.

“The Tony Charlton Chair of Oncology signifies a great collaboration between Monash and the Alfred, and provides the opportunity for many leaders in the field to drive important research and clinical excellence in the fight against cancer,” said Professor John McNeil, Head of SPHPM.

Professor Zalcberg is Professor of Cancer Research at SPHPM – prior to joining SPHPM he was the Director, Division of Cancer Medicine, at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for 17 years. An esteemed researcher and clinician in the field of oncology, specialising in gastrointestinal cancer, Professor Zalcberg has been involved in numerous groups and organisations.

He was a founder of the Lorne Cancer Conference and the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group (AGITG) and the immediate past Chair of the Board of AGITG after serving in this role for over 15 years; a past Board Member of Cancer Trials Australia; a past Board Member of the NSW Cancer Institute; past President of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia; and a past Member of the Consultative Council of the Victorian Cancer Agency. He is the current Co-Chair of the Cancer Drugs Alliance and Chair of the Australian Clinical TrialsAlliance.

This important new role has been created in honour Tony Charlton AM, sports broadcaster and long supporter of the Alfred. Tony’s first contact with the hospital was in 1993 when his daughter needed life-saving surgery – after the successful transplant surgery, Tony began tirelessly fundraising for the hospital. He was the Life Governor of the Alfred, a member of various committees and Board Chairman for many years. Tony was directly involved with raising more than $140 million in funding during his time at the Alfred.
